What is the NAS Annual Conference?

NAS CONFERENCE Adopt A Wreck AwardFeaturing presentations from a range of professional and amateur archaeologists, the NAS 2008 Annual Conference will provide an opportunity to discuss research, review the archaeological activities of members, exchange ideas on encouraging access to our shared heritage, and network with friends and colleagues from the UK and abroad.

An exciting international event, the NAS 2008 Conference will incorporate a Maritime Trade Display, Poster Display, the Annual Adopt-A-Wreck Award, and the 2008 NAS Annual General Meeting.

Where? Action Stations, the Conference Venue...

This year the Conference will again be held ACTION STATIONS, the Royal Navy’s experiential venue in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Action Stations is located in Boathouse No. 6, the heart of the Dockyard. Entry is through Victory Gate at the corner of Queen Street and the Hard.

How to get there? 

Directions to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard:
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is located within Portsmouth Naval Base with entry through Victory Gate at the corner of Queen Street and the Hard. 

By Road: the Historic Dockyard is less than 5 miles from Junction 12 of the M27. Follow the brown Historic Waterfront signs from the M27 and join the M275 into Portsmouth. The Historic Ships Coach and Car Park is located on Queens Street. If you would like more detailed directions to the Dockyard, please try the RAC Route Planner or the AA Route Guide.

By Air, Coach, Bus, Rail and Sea: Portsmouth Harbour Station / Hard Interchange coach and bus station is a few minutes walk from Victory Gate.

Air: The closest airport is Southampton (only 35 minutes by car). Pre-booked taxies from Southampton Airport to Portsmouth cost  £25. To pre-book contact City-Wide Taxi Company on +44(0) 23 9283 3333. You will need to book in advance to be eligible for this rate. Taxi’s collected at the airport will charge an ordinary fare, plus airport surcharge. London Gatwick is connected by Portsmouth by rail. See ‘rail’ notes below for details.

Rail: London Waterloo Station to Portsmouth Harbour Station is only a 90-minute journey and these run frequently. There are also regular services to and from Southampton Central with links to the South West and the West Country. For timetable details please use the links below. For bookings and timetable information visit National Rail or South West Trains.

Coaches: Free Coach parking for pre-paid groups at Historic Dockyard Car and Coach park on Queens Street. The majority of national coach services to Portsmouth stop at the Hard Interchange (adjacent to Dockyard entrance).

Bus: Many local and regional bus services stop at the Hard Interchange (adjacent to Dockyard entrance). Please visit First Bus or Stagecoach bus services for the most up to date routes and timetables.


By Sea: Ferry services operate from France, Spain, the Isle of Wight and Gosport on a regular basis. For details visit Wightlink, or P & O Ferries.

Accomodation - The Royal Maritime Club -

The NAS has been fortunate enough to secure accommodation at the Royal Maritime Club at the ‘Serving Seafarers’ rate, a discount exclusively for NAS Conference delegates. 

Close to Action Stations and the Historic Dockyard, rooms at the Royal Maritime Club cost only £28 per person per night regardless of whether the room is a single, double or twin. The Club is an excellent value and has come highly recommended by a number of the NAS 2007 Conference delegates.

Car Parking - There are a limited number of parking spaces on the Club premises available on a first come first served basis. If you are able to access one of these spaces, please advise reception on arrival. Alternatively, the Club reception will issue you with a resident temporary parking permits (for on street parking). Alternatively, an NCP is within easy reach together with two other public car parks.
